Questions:

  • Is being holy something more active or stative, i.e. something we do, or something we are/are declared to be? Is holiness equivalent to having our conduct "in-check"?
  • Read Psalm 79. In 1 Peter, we read, "if you call on him as Father who judges impartially...". How are holiness and justice related to one another? How is this connected to the ideas of covenant and community?
  • What or who are we called to set our hope on? How is this related to the trials (v1:6) the letter's recipients have endured?
  • In what way(s) do trials (past, present, or potential) affect our behavior (Peter calls it "your conduct") and our culpability? How is our view of trials related to our view of sin and its consequences?
  • Why does the call to holiness lead Peter to consider the cost of Christ's sacrifice? What benefits do we have over the prophets (vv1:10-11)?
